We once went on a hike with Kevin Mastin's burros El Camino and Pilgrim and it was far more difficult than I ever thought it would be. They are BIG--even smallish El Camino--and have such a mind of their own. It was difficult to get them to cross streams. They did, however, carry our wine, cheese, and crackers for us.
Thank you for all you do. I subscribe to a few Substacks and your is the only one that I always read every time. Love Harrison's posts, too.
I can imagine why the start of the race is tricky.
My husband and I are members of the Leadville Legends Gunfighters club. Steve ("The Marshall") fires the starting shot for the Boom Days Pack Burro Races. One year that Boom Days Committee had the Gunfighters do crowd control at the beginning and end of the race. There were so many unruly people who simply would not stay out of the street, getting in of the way of the burros, brought dogs with them (against the rules), argued with us, etc. We explained that some burros would not want to cross the finish line when they saw a bunch of misbehaving people and dogs in the way. We never agreed to do it again, but we love to watch it!
Love it! Keep sharing.
Your family is ever-inspiring, Hal. God bless and keep up the good work! 🤗
